RALCOMM WIRELESS HIGH-SPEED INTERNET SERVICES
How much faster is this wireless service than a dialup phone connection?
The speed will vary from computer to computer, but as a general rule, you can expect it to be approximately 30 times faster. For example, a Website that takes 30 seconds to load on a 56K dialup connection would load in about 1 second with Ralcomm's wireless high-speed Internet.
Do I need any extra equipment to get set up?
To be able to receive wireless high-speed Internet services, standard equipment includes an antenna, a radio (for sending and receiving a signal) and cabling. Depending on your specific circumstances, including location and proximity to our towers, you may need additional items and services to access Ralcomm's wireless high-speed Internet. Examples include extra cabling, hardware, raising the antenna on a tower (i.e. - due to trees or hills), and optionally hooking up an internal network, etc. Call your local Ralcomm for an estimate.
Is it possible to connect several computers to the Internet through one connection?
Yes. In most cases, you would purchase a router and some extra lengths of cable to allow the computers to access the existing connection. Ralcomm carries these items, and offers installation services.
Is it possible to set up a wireless local network between two or more buildings?
Yes. Ralcomm also provides wireless networking solutions between buildings, offices, etc. which can give all buildings on your site access to your own internal network.
What factors affect my access to wireless high-speed Internet?
Two things are essential for connecting with one of our towers:
- You must be within the range of the tower's signal. (This can be up to 30 miles)
- Your antenna must have a clear, unimpeded line-of-sight path to the tower antenna.
Trees, hills and buildings can prevent the signal from getting through. In some cases, a customer antenna may need to be moved a distance or elevated to gain a clear line-of-sight path. This would incur extra cost.
To check whether you can get wireless high-speed Internet access at your location, contact your local Ralcomm.
If I am not in range of a wireless tower, can I still access Ralcomm's wireless high-speed Internet?
In this situation, a good idea would be to contact other people in your vicinity who may also be interested in this service. Once a particular area has enough interest, a tower can be erected in the vicinity to provide wireless Internet services.
If access is not available in your area, a second alternative offered by Ralcomm is LINCSAT (connection via satellite). The cost is slightly more than wireless high-speed Internet, but LINCSAT is still considerably faster than dial-up services.
